U12C Red Divas grab the SILVER at the U12C Regionals in Richmond
In what’s seems to be a sequel of the old movie from the 70’s (The Bad News Bears) the Coquitlam Red Diva’s finished off the season with a SILVER medal at the U12C Regional Championships on the June 20-21st weekend.
Coming off their league playoff championships, on Sunday the Diva’s headed into the quarter finals vs the #3 ranked New West Royals. Great hitting, aggressive base running and a incredible game ending double play by Jade Pankiw, Diva ‘s win 17-15.
In the semi- final the Diva’s faced the #2 North Shore Eagles. Behind solid pitching from Mikayla Windle and great team hitting the Diva’s were in control of this game from start to finish winning 12 – 9.
In the finals the Diva’s faced the #1 ranked Burnaby Roadrunners. In the first inning the Diva’s scored 5 runs highlighted by Carissa Dedes big hit, scoring Taylor Thate and Jessie Mckinney. Good pitching by Sara Sutherland combined with clutch defense kept the game close as the Diva’s were winning 10-8 after 3 innings. Heading into the top of the final inning, Ashley Smith hit a towering 2 run home run. But the storybook season came to a close as in the bottom of the final inning, Burnaby came back to win the gold 13-12.
Coach Jason Smith commented, just like the movie, our Bad News Diva’s started the season 1 win and 13 loses. The girls finally bonded and turned a corner finishing 4th in the Kamloops tourney and got on a run on the last portion of the season, highlighted with a league playoff championship and a silver medal at the U12 Regionals. These girls played like champions today and I was proud to be a part of it!
Congratulations to the Red Divas!
